The torch test
Turn the TV on and play something with sound. In a dark room, hold a torch close to the screen at a sharp angle and look carefully. If you can faintly see a moving picture, the panel is alive and only the backlight has failed — an affordable repair.
What it means if you see a picture
The backlight strips or their driver circuit have failed. On most sets sold in Bangladesh this is a routine repair costing between ৳2,000 and ৳6,500 depending on screen size.
What it means if you see nothing
Either the panel itself has failed or there is no signal reaching it — which could still be the T-Con board or the main board, both repairable. Only a workshop test can separate those, so do not assume the worst yet.
Signs of a genuinely dead panel
Spider-web cracks, a spreading dark blot, a permanent thick vertical band, or liquid-looking patches. Physical panel damage is not economically repairable and no honest shop will claim otherwise.
Questions to ask the technician
Ask them to show you the fault before they fix it. A technician who can point at the failed strip or the burnt component is a technician who actually diagnosed it.
